CAS Blog 11-13-19 (Service)

Over the weekend, I got to do lots of good service by participating in my brothers' Eagle Scout project. The project was at a place called Willow River Farms, which is a residency place for the mentally handicapped. Our goal of the project was to clean and stain four decks on one of the buildings so that they would look new. The place was about 45 minutes away from my house, and all of us participating in the project packed into a big van to get over there. Once we got there we unpacked all of our stuff, and Ethan started guiding us on what to do. At first, we cleaned the decks of any loose paint or leaves that might have been on it so it wouldn't get covered in stain and leave open spots on the deck. Once we cleaned all of the them, we taped the walls so that the stain wouldn't get on to the walls, which took a while. After we did that, we able to start staining which at first went pretty quickly. Our group was able to finish the first two decks fairly quickly, covering them in a fresh coat of stain. It was all going pretty well at first, that was until was ran out of stain. While we were going over the fourth and final deck, we ran out of stain halfway through. My mom ran out to go quickly buy some more stain, but there was a miscommunication, and she ended up getting the wrong stain! When we went over with the new stain, it ended up looking awful, so we had to go and get another coat of stain. This whole process was very tedious, but thankfully we ended up getting it done at around 4:30. Along with that it was for a very good cause, and I feel like that made it all worth it in the end.

Learning outcome 5: I was working with a large group of people to accomplish our common goal of helping people. Although there was some miscommunication, we worked hard and collaborated effectively for the majority of the time, and I value that effective communication and collaboration a lot more.
