Today I went to a protest for the River Oak Theater. Unfortunately, the theater has fallen behind on its rent payments, and the company that owns the land is trying to close it. The theater is one of the only theaters in Houston that shows independent and art films, and also the only one that does Rocky Horror Picture Show screenings too. I don't want to see this wonderful Houston landmark go to the wayside, so I went out to a protest organized by the people who perform Rocky Horror Picture Show at the theater.  It was my first time seeing almost any of them in nearly a year, but it was definitely good to see them all again. They were all carrying signs and wearing their costumes, and I was really happy to see there were so many people there that don't want to see the theater go. Apparently, over 100 people showed up at the protest, which is really surprising to hear about. Don't worry though, it was socially distanced, and everybody was wearing their masks. It was really ...

Last weekend I participated in another one of my friend's Eagle Scout projects, and it was a really good service project. I've been going to a lot of these over the last few months because I promised that everyone who went to my project that I'd go to theirs. For the project, we helped move furniture and plant a garden in a community center in Bellaire. There were a lot more people than I thought there'd be, and I got to see a lot of my friends from scouts.  The hardest part of it was moving all of their furniture, which mostly consisted of heavy objects such as desks and printers. Once we got all of that done we started laying out the plants. Thankfully, we had water and food so we didn't get super worn out, but it was still a lot of heavy lifting and hard work. Once we were done, we got to have pizza and look at all of the work we'd done while talking amongst ourselves. Seeing your work after it's completed it very rewarding, and I hope I'll be able t...

CAS Blog 1-27-21 (Creative)

For this blog, I've been working heavily on the creativity part of CAS. I have completed one painting, and am currently working on a second one. Both pieces have been a way for me to experiment with the fact that I have limited colors to work with, but I think they're very interesting. The first painting I made was done using exclusively shades of black and grey, and the one I'm currently working on is exclusively black and white.      I decided to make these paintings because I needed more works for my senior art show, and I didn't want to do a drawing like I have for most of my other works. For one of them, I actually have a sizeable canvas, and I can't wait to get all of it done and filled out.     I would say that this falls under learning outcome 5, showing perseverance and commitment. This is because I have been working on my senior art show for over six months now, and am committed to completing it.

For the first activity of the new year, I went to a protest after the attack on the capitol on January 6th. I was horrified by what happened at the capitol, and I knew that I had to do something to protest what happened. Originally I was planning on protesting by myself outside of senator Cornyn's office, but then I learned of a protest happening with other people that I decided to join. I made a sign that said "Stop Trump, defend democracy" and I stood at a busy intersection for a few hours calling for the impeachment of Trump. It made me feel a lot better to get my voice out like that and be seen fighting for something that I know is right.  Learning outcome 6: The attack on the capitol happened only two days ago, and I went protesting the day after it happened. I also intend on going to another protest sometime soon if they're planning on having any.

With the Christmas season over I've been reflecting a lot on the year, and also what I want to do for next year. That's why I've decided to start my new year's resolution early and get back to exercising. I had a personal trainer for a while, but currently, I don't feel safe going to the gym with other people around, so I'll be doing this on my own. I've been running consistently since early this summer, but I feel like there's more I can do to be in shape. So starting when I get back from my grandma's house, I'm going to do the following workout routine.  100 push-ups, 100 sit-ups, 100 squats, and a half-mile run. I want to do this at least two or three times a week to keep myself in shape, and to supplement the somewhat minimal physical activity I've been getting lately. I'm hoping that this will make me feel better, and become more active in general.  Learning outcome 3: I've planned out this workout routine for when I get back fr...

Last weekend I was able to participate in another eagle scout project that was run by one of my friends. This time, we were helping to set up light fixtures and put some plants around the sign at the church that our troop meets at. We got together a good group of scouts, most of which I know from my time in the troop, and did a lot of hard work.  The biggest challenge I'd say was actually getting the soil to where it needed to be. The area around the sign was very big, so they had bought almost 30 bags of soil for us to spread around it. After carrying all of them and putting down the soil, we spent a good amount of the time just trying to get the soil at an equal level in every part of the circle around the sign. Thankfully, my friend who was leading the project was prepared and had provided us with gloves, shovels, and hoes, which made the job a lot easier.  The end result of the project was very good-looking, and I'm happy with how it turned out. In all honesty, I'd a...

Last weekend, I was able to go on a campout with some friends, and it went great! Because of COVID, we had to start planning several weeks in advance, and all get tested to make sure we were safe. We also quarantined after we got tested just to stay extra safe. We camped out at Stephen F. Austin State Park, which was about an hour's drive out of the city, and we made it there with no problems.  Once we got to the campsite and set up our tents, it was really lovely being outdoors and away from everything else. It reminded me a lot of the boy scout campouts that I used to go on, although it was a lot calmer. We had burgers for dinner and spent the night talking and playing card games. In the morning we got up a little early and did some hiking around the trails, and admired the scenery. Then around 11:00 we packed up and headed back home. I'm very grateful that I was able to go camping with my friends last weekend. I got to see many of them for the first time in a while, and in...
