CAS Blog 12-11-19 (Service)

Over last weekend, I participated in service for NHS. We were working with Interfaith Ministries and Chore Chops to help elderly people with chores and other such things that they might not be able to do otherwise. It started at around 9:00 on Saturday morning, and we split into two groups each working on two peoples homes. The drive to the first house took a while, and we even stopped at the wrong house, but eventually we made it to the first woman's house. Our task at her house was to rake all of the leaves in her front yard, and put them into trash bags, which was a lot more difficult than that might sound. There was an absurd amount of leaves, but thankfully our group was able to efficiently rake them all together, and put large amounts of them into the few trash bags we had. The lady we were helping was also very nice to us, and she seemed to greatly appreciate what we were doing, which felt really nice.
After that the second house we went to was in a lot worse shape than the first. The woman we were helping was renting out the back three rooms of a house that seemed to be very rundown. She wanted us to shake out some of her rugs and clean her kitchen. I won't lie I thought the house was disgusting, the house reeked of cigarette smoke, and it just seemed very dirty. I honestly felt really bad for the woman living there, she said she was essentially being forced to move out because her landlord was raising her rent on her residence which was in disrepair and had black mold in it. Anyway, the main tasks that I helped out with were shaking out some of the rugs, and cleaning a bit of the kitchen. Both of these were pretty difficult tasks, but the woman was very appreciative of us helping her out, and once again I felt good that we were able help her even just a little bit.
I would say that this service event most prominently demonstrated learning outcome 5, because I worked collaboratively with the other members of NHS, and using our skills to help get the job done.
