Cas Blog 6-3-20 (Service)
Today was my first day doing my CAS project of volunteering at the Houston Food Bank. This is a long-term thing that I plan to do every week over the course of the summer. I am doing this because I want to do my service hours while also helping people who are in need.
The operation was socially distanced, and also very efficient. I worked in a group in an assembly line type fashion to help put together meal packages for lower-income families. My job was to put boxes of cereal into the packages, which sounds simple but surprisingly was not. The line was going very quickly, so I had to put the cereal in very quickly so as to not slow down the line. Along with that, I had to position them in just the right spot so that there would still be room for everything else in the box. I had to communicate with everyone else on the line to make sure it would all work out as well. It was good work, but also pretty strenuous.
I also got acquainted with some other people who are doing volunteering for the summer, and they were all very nice. I'm looking forward to doing further service and continuing to help out over the summer. The food bank is always in need of volunteers, and I'm glad that I'm able to help.
This shows learning outcome 5 because I had to communicate with all of the other volunteers to get things done as quickly as possible. Through our collaboration, we were able to put together 5 palettes of meals!
